Questions Men Ask Before Joining A Men's Group
I don't really have anyone I can talk to about real stuff. Is that normal for guys?
More common than you'd think! Men have fewer close friendships than women, male friendship has been in decline for the last 20 years, many struggle to even find a best-man for their wedding! Many men list their partner as their only real confidant. That works until it doesn't — when the relationship is strained, when she's overwhelmed, or when she starts feeling like your therapist. Men's group at Forge Psychology are small groups of men who show up, talk about the hard stuff, and keep it confidential. Many members say it's the first place they've talked honestly in years.
I've tried therapy before and it didn't really do anything for me. What's different about a group?
One-on-one therapy isn't for everyone. Some men find that talking at a therapist feels performative or one-sided. A group is different — you're not just talking about your life, you're in a room with other men who have felt the pain you're feeling. Hearing someone else put words to what you've been carrying, and being believed when you speak, hits different. Groups at Forge Psychology are small, structured, and facilitated — not a free-for-all.
I don't want to sit in a circle talking about my feelings. What actually happens in a men's group?
That's a fair thing to want to know before showing up. Men's groups at Forge Psychology are structured conversations, not venting sessions. There's a facilitator who keeps things on track. You won't be pressured to share anything before you're ready, and you won't be surrounded by people in crisis. The topics are practical and real: stress, relationships, identity, work, what you want your life to look like. It tends to feel more like a conversation with other men that have felt your pain and understand the struggle, rather than therapy.
I feel like I'm doing fine on the outside but something feels off and I can't explain it. What is that?
It has a few names — numb, discontent, emptiness. It's very common in men who are objectively successful but feel disconnected from meaning, purpose or themselves. It often shows up in their 30s, 40s or after a major life transition. It usually means something needs attention that has been ignored for years. A men's group is one of the few places where men can explore this without judgement, name it out loud, feel understood, and feel more confident to deal with it.
Would I have to talk about childhood or past trauma?
Not unless you want to. Men's groups at Forge Psychology are present-focused. You're there to work on your life now — your relationships, your patterns, what you're building and what's getting in the way. If something from your past is relevant and you choose to bring it, the group can hold it. But there's no requirement to excavate your history, and the facilitator won't push you there.
I already have a therapist. Would a men's group add anything?
Often, yes. Individual therapy is great at helping you make sense of your inner expereince. A group adds something different: real-time feedback from other men who have been through your pain, accountability, and the experience of being seen by people who aren't paid to be there. Many men do both. Some find the group is where insights from individual therapy actually get tested and practiced. Group work hits different.
I don't want to end up being the emotional support for a bunch of strangers. How does that work?
Groups are facilitated, which means there's a structure and someone whose job is to make sure it doesn't become one person's crisis week after week. It's not a support hotline. Everyone shows up with their own material. The facilitator manages the balance so no one person dominates and no one carries more than their share. Most men are surprised by how much they receive from the group, not just how much they give.
My wife thinks I need therapy but I'm not sure I agree. Could a group be a middle ground?
Possibly. A men's group isn't therapy in the traditional sense — there's no diagnosis, no treatment plan, no psychoanalysis. It's a structured space where men work on themselves together. Some men find it's an easier entry point than one-on-one therapy, and a lot of them end up valuing it in ways they didn't expect. Intimidated by 1-1 therapy? A group can be a lower-stakes way to start. Forge Psychology even has some free groups to try first.
I travel for work or have an unpredictable schedule. Can I still join?
It depends on the format. Some groups at Forge Psychology are "drop-in", meaning anyone can join and there's no commitment for future sessions. Others, require consistency and is part of the therapeutic value of it. The important thing is to be honest about your schedule before joining. Reach out and we'll help you find a group that actually fits your life.
What kind of men are usually in these groups? I don't want to be the only normal one.
Men in their 30s to 50s, mostly. Professionals, tradespeople, fathers, guys going through a divorce or career shift, men who are doing well by most measures but feel like something is missing. Not men in crisis, generally — men who are functional and want more than functional. If you're thinking of joining, you probably won't stand out. After their first session, most men say that the group was more relatable than they expected.
